10 Great Seconds – Mad as Hell

January 17, 2012

This is from Network – the movie that the line “I’m mad as Hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” comes from. Also the film from 1976 where writer Paddy Chayefsky predicts what a circus television news would become. Watch the movie and see if you don’t see a whole lot of what’s on cable news networks nowadays.

This scene is after Howard Beale, the network anchor who’s gone loopy played by Peter Finch, gets called into network president’s office for some things he said the night before on his show. We’ve only seen the president (Ned Beatty) once before in the film, and in that scene he basically said “Um hmm.” He’s been presented as calm, composed, and in control. So to speak to a crazy man, he brings him into the boardroom, adjusts the lights to put a spotlight on his chair, and begins this speech…

It goes on like that for a while. It’s a pretty awesome scene in a pretty awesome film. Even though it’s 35 years old, you should really check it out.
