Technology (and the people using it) Rocks!

October 31, 2012

This is a link to an article about the OLPC program – OLPC stands for One Laptop Per Child, and the group has the idea to bring laptops (now changed to tablet computers) to every child in the world. They developed an inexpensive laptop, and have delivered 3 million around the the world in developing nations.

They recently experimented in two villages in Ethiopia, just dropping the tablets off, sealed in boxes. The children had probably never seen printed language before, ever, or even an on-off switch.

Here’s the quote that gets me:

“I thought the kids would play with the boxes. Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, found the on-off switch … powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child, per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android,” Negroponte said. “Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera, and they figured out the camera, and had hacked Android.”

Seriously makes me want to cry. What an awesome world we live in. Here’s the link.
